Wanting Sunrise

Wanting Sunrise

I want to savor this sunrise

to hold it fast like a child

holds his bear for comfort.

I want to reach like those

celestial cloud fingers stretching

to grasp the splash of dawn,

striving then beyond to know

creation’s greater glow.

I want to bear it home, embrace

the swirling rainbow swarm

through night’s dark keep,

refashion and mold it,

so I might fling it merrily up again

tomorrow and beyond,

yearning to find it not

for all its harlequin music

a glorious flowering fizzle.
